Hydrological monitoring is being transformed by low-power sensors, on-device AI and long-range wireless networks. This hands-on FDRI workshop gives you four days to learn TinyML and LoRaWAN from first principles, build a working sensing prototype, and pitch a real use-case for flood and drought resilience.
Agenda
- Day 1 - Sense: on-device computer vision with Arduino Nicla: From blinking an LED to running your first vision model.
- Day 2 - Transmit: LoRaWAN fundamentals and MQTT: Get sensor data flowing from device to a live dashboard.
- Day 3 - Listen & Build: Audio ML and wake-word detection, then pitch, team up and kick off your own project.
- Day 4 - The New Frontier: Edge LLMs on the Arduino UNO Q, final build time, demos, and a roundtable on what's next.
Who should apply
- UK-based researchers & practitioners in flood and drought resilience
- Early-career scientists especially welcome
- No prior TinyML, LoRaWAN or sensing experience needed
- Basic coding familiarity + an interest in fieldwork
- No soldering or hardware skills required

- Fully working test kits provided, though participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own sensing designs
